How to Get In The Zone

Please note that we are NOT the original writers of this blog post. All credit goes to the original writers. Find the original post as published at this link: http://www.functionalselfdefense.org/blog/how-to-get-in-the-zone-wake-up/

Hold on to this heart conscious awareness. Here you’ll see the arising of thoughts but be unaffected by them. Every feeling, what you see, hear, feel, and some other thoughts that arise, will be one in the exact same – consciousness or energy in the current flow. You will be in the zone, awake. Attempt to maintain it even as you get up from the meditation spot. Try to keep it longer and longer, and more often.

From the core consciousness you will perceive the arising of thoughts. On this level the perception of a thought arising will be no different to you from the perception of the sound of a bird chirping. The perception of a thought arising, no matter the contents of the thought, won’t affect or alter your core consciousness.
Being fully aware at the present flow, conscious from the level of your heart consciousness, there’s a profound freedom – freedom from the past, the future, the constraints of your thoughts and ideas – and a profound perception of perfection and satisfaction. The experience is like waking from a dream. Every sight, sound, and feeling becomes clearer. On observation and reflection, deep and numerous insights can be realized.
How long this state lasts and how frequently you access it largely determines how much it affects your life. The longer and more often you wake up, the more it rewires your brain, the more insights you’ll be able to realize, resulting in deeper places, and the more quickly and easily you can do it at will.
This is the goal.  You may have the ability to skip steps 1 and 2 and go straight for this step.  In my own practice, I start here now.  If this doesn’t make sense to you, after practicing steps 1 and 2 for a while, it should begin to make sense.
The more you do it, the longer it will last, and the nearer your everyday mind will be to it. You’ll be able to notice when a negative or unproductive thought arises, quickly go to your heart degree of consciousness, and clear your mind of this negativity.

What Is Waking Up?

I’ve practiced different types of meditation since 1992, but I’m really not a meditation instructor.  I did teach a basic form of meditation which I learned from my first instructor to many of my pupils, for 10 years or so, aimed at developing concentration for martial arts/self defense practice, and although that practice had a deep and profound impact on me, I do not have the experience of efficiently guiding practitioners there.

The post How to Get In The Zone appeared first on Functional Self Defense.
1. My preference would be to use a zafu cushion and sit on the floor, cross-legged. You can shut your eyes or leave them open. Lots of people prefer to close their eyes. I prefer to keep mine open and fixed on a stage in front of me.  Take a couple of breaths to relax, and then only observe your breathing. Celebrate the inhalation, and observe the exhalation. Ideas will disrupt your observation. When you realize you’ve become lost in thought, return your monitoring to the present flow of your breathing. Do this for a while.
In our ordinary consciousness we believe we are identical to our own ideas. There’s a fundamental lack of liberty in this, not to mention emotional instability.

If you take the time and effort to do this, you can maximize your performance in everything you do. You can realize a liberating freedom, unchained from your past and out of the constraints of thinking and conceptions. You can literally wake up from the dream-like state that the huge majority of individuals live in. I strongly recommend it.
The name Buddha means “one who is awake”, and refers to this ideal. For meditators, life is your performance, and the goal is to awaken and maintain the experience throughout life.

The steps I have described were favorably influenced by a Sam Harris podcast with Joseph Goldstein, and Harris’ book, Waking Up. The thought that had the biggest impact on both my practice and my capacity to describe it had been said by Sam Harris as an idea from Dzogchen: “The aim is the route . ”

3. Here is the somewhat tricky/subtle part – Turn your attention inward and search for what it is that’s observing your body, breath, and everything externally. In this looking, you’ll see nothing there but your heart consciousness in the present flow.
The ability to “wake up” or maintain the zone at will is more valuable than anything else you may achieve. It is the doorway not just to optimum performance, but much more importantly, to a profound sense of happiness and satisfaction in life where stress, sadness, anger, and pain cannot touch you – liberation and freedom. There’s nothing better.

To be fully aware in the present flow cannot happen on the level of your thinking mind. It can only occur on the amount of your core consciousness.

Disclaimer

This condition of being in the zone is the identical state that meditators work to discover, maintain, observe, and gain insight from – a state of core consciousness and consciousness, unobstructed by notions and conceptions.

How Long Does It Last?

How Do You Exercise?

My current sitting meditation practice is fairly simple, but it does take time and effort – time and effort really well spent. I’m not a meditation instructor, but I can tell you what works well for me.
Great actors of all kinds, from athletes to artists, have experienced being from the zone. It is the perfect state for functionality, where the actress and performance are one, unobstructed by conscious thought.
Many performers assume that this state of mind is a random byproduct of this action of performing, not realizing it is simply a state of mind that with practice can be easily accessible.

Establishing a Practice

We do not exist in the past. We do not exist in the future. We only exist in the present flow. There is only the current flow. It is the only area where we really exist.
These two steps alone will do a great deal to stop your thought patterns, reduce anxiety, and improve your physical health.

Thus, your heart consciousness, perceptions, feelings, and emotions aren’t affected or influenced by your thoughts or ideas.
2. Expand your awareness/observation to your whole body. Your breath is part of your body consciousness, and you can use it to keep you in the flow of the present. Do this for some time.

The ultimate goal for a number of meditators is to wake up permanently, the brain state of what is possibly only a mythical Buddha. I am open to the possibility, but I have serious doubts as to if waking up indefinitely is achievable. If it’s, to rewire your mind so completely it would likely require living isolated and meditating continuously for the majority of your life. But there is a spectrum, from one unrealized experience of being in the zone that does nothing to change your life, to a fully enlightened Buddha.
I’ve tried to write about this a number of times over the years without sounding either crazy, unintelligible, or pointless. Today I believe I may have found the words to make intellectual sense.
This waking up practice gives you the ability to be alive and happy on a level that many people, sleepwalking through life or riding on the waves of their unconscious thoughts, can hardly imagine. Again, it’s literally like waking from a dream.
This idea is that there’s not a route where the goal is only found at the end of the path. It simply involves looking in the right place in the right way. The path to the final goal, a full and permanent awakening, or at least an extension of this time that we’re awake, is to simply continue to the experience of waking up. The goal is the path.

Forge Yourself In The Way

Thanks to Gary Fisher for the photograph I used to accompany this article.
How do we invent ourselves in the Way as Miyamoto Musashi directed in the classic text The Book Of Five Rings? I think there are several things we need to do so as to forge ourselves at the manner. These include:
So that’s it in a nutshell. If you wish to forge yourself in the Way, train, study and live life. Those are the keys to things.
Training. We train. And we train for ourselves. Sure, getting those things and more are benefits from training, but they’re not the reason we train. We train , and as part of the forging Musashi talked about. And we train wherever we are. The individual training in their house, like the picture used with this site, are forging themselves just as much as those in the fanciest of colleges. It’s the commitment in a single ’s heart to their training which makes it count, not the location or clothes one wears while doing it.

Studying. This includes studying ancient texts like The Book of Five Rings, The Art of War, and many others. But in addition, it includes studying modern resources on training, in addition to resources in your areas of expertise. Become a comprehensive person by studying and training in more than simply fighting arts.

Living. Training and Studying are essential, but you must also live! You must get out and live life to the fullest and incorporate what you’ve learned and educated in to help others. After all, what good is studying and training in the event you don’t do anything? And do great things, make a difference. Help and teach others. That’s truly living life.

Combat Training.
The first thing you ought to be teaching children to do is to learn to signal for support.

3 Critical Survival Skills To Educate Children

The more they understand, the less scared they’ll be.

Survival Training For Kids

Critical Survival Skills For Children
You realize that your child has been separated from your group.
Here’s a summary of what he told me.
Your kids must learn to be very observant.
Teach them about using their voices and with a signaling device like a whistle.

Would your child know how to survive?
Unfortunately, there are a lot of television and novels available right now that paint children and teens as these epic dramatic heroes.

1.
Investing the time and training today to make your kids more self-sufficient could be the difference between life and death.

You’ve got to take some time to teach your kids some basic survival skills.
If they’re prepared for it, they’ll be able to tackle it if it happens to them.

If they wait too long, it is going to be too late.
Here are three skills you need to reach your children:

The sooner they indicate, the better the odds are that they’ll be close enough for you to hear them.
What will you do… and what will THEY do?

Recently I discussed children ’ survival situations with survival expert Kevin Estela.

Jeff Anderson

Jeff Anderson, Editor

Educating your kids these observations abilities makes them better able to assist you help THEM.

They should be able to describe the last known point they saw and to identify landmarks.

Teach them, too, to make noise once they realize they are lost.

We need to look at what we can realistic expect a child to do when out in the forests.

3.
In certain scenarios, your child might be stranded overnight in the woods.

2. Learn How to Observe

If they’re not scared, they won’t panic.

Three Types of Learning – Which One Do You Use?

Please note that we are NOT the original writers of this blog post. All credit goes to the original writers. Find the original post as published at this link: http://mdpofsd.blogspot.com/2014/06/three-types-of-learning-which-one-do.html

There are three Different categories of learning: Vertical Learning, Horizontal Learning, and Connective Learning.

Vertical Learning is the process of learning in a step by step linear style. You begin with the basics and build on the basics with successively more complex concepts, skills, tasks, etc.. Learning math is an example of this process. Added and subtraction leads to algebra with leads to calculus, etc. Vertical Learning is typical in the martial arts in which basic skills are taught to beginning students and more advanced skills are taught to students that have mastered the fundamentals. Colored belts that designate position is typically a mark of Vertical Learning.

Step 1 -> Step 2 -> Step 3 -> Step 4

Horizontal Learning is the process of learning additional theories, skills, tasks, etc. which are independent of previous learning. Using math , learning geometry is distinct from learning statistics. One area doesn’t necessarily build upon another. In the martial arts, Horizontal Learning is seen by successive learning of different unrelated styles of martial arts. The person who has a belts in Karate, BJJ, Aikido, and Tai Chi is utilizing Horizontal Learning.

Topic A + Subject B + Subject C + Subject D

The third method is Connective Learning. Connective Learning is the process of incorporating and networking concepts, skills, tasks, etc. together to achieve understanding. Connective Learning is about building the understanding of the connections between different concepts, skills, and tasks. The math example is seeing the relation of the common principles between geometry, statistics, and calculus. The martial artist that is able to relate the outwardly differing elements of various styles together to create unifying principles is using Connective Learning process. Acquiring and applying is a form processing. Therefore, intelligence is the ability to process knowledge and skills. The mind is the body’s central processor. It utilizes an estimated 100 billion brain cells that each hold pieces of data and communicate with each other to store information, knowledge, and perform tasks. Connective Learning is the process of interconnecting (integrating) these Cells together as efficacy as possible. If each link is represented by a line, Vertical Learning utilizes three lines to connect four Measures. Horizontal Learning uses three lines to connect four Subjects. But Connective Learning is the process of creating the permutations (relationships, integrations, connectivity) between those boosters. How many different permutations can come from 8 different Cells? The answer is 40,320! Therefore, effective Connective Learning requires highlighting the “best” permutations. At that point, the student should understand that he or she’s currently developing connectivity as opposed to either a more complex skill or an extra skill. Therefore, a vital part of this Connective Learning procedure is the basic understanding of these three types of learning.

A Bad Review

Please note that we are NOT the original writers of this blog post. All credit goes to the original writers. Find the original post as published at this link: http://www.functionalselfdefense.org/blog/a-bad-review/

Bad Review

On both my site and in my book, I explain the foundation of unarmed physical self defense training should be what I call the MMA Base, which is only training punches, kicks, elbows, knees, and wrestling against the uncooperative opponent.  If you do not train these most common methods against an uncooperative opponent, then you can’t learn to defend against them.  Period.  Many martial arts practitioners don’t realize this.  It should be entirely uncontroversial, but unfortunately it isn’t.  So as to learn to defend against something, you need to actually train against it!

After Chapter 6, on the MMA Base, there are chapters on Functional Self Defense, Environmental Applications, and Physical and Mental Fitness – all vital components of self defense that have nothing at all to do with game based fighting.

Before I get to the MMA Base in the book, in Chapter 1 I cover the difference between self defense and martial arts, pointing to how self defense and MMA/sport based fighting are not the same.  The first chapter of my novel points out the opposite of what this reviewer claims I insist upon.  Again, this is the opposite of saying that game based fighting should form the base for real world self defense.  Chapters 4 and 5 cover more aspects of self defense plan, together with functional training.
“The techniques and systems of the MMA Base are designed primarily for one-on-one sport based fights between men and women in similar weight classes, in a place intended for safe fighting, where both participants understand what is about to happen. There are rules that prohibit some of the most effective and damaging techniques from being used, and by eliminating those techniques from the equation, unique and effective footwork, perfect for self defense, is also failed. For the most efficient and effective physical self defense, we must go beyond the MMA Base. ”
I receive emails nearly daily from people who have read my books or spent time on my website, telling me how much they have learned from the content.  The majority of them have practiced other martial arts, and many are martial arts instructors.  Just as I was taught ineffective material and thought it was powerful, these individuals have done the same.  Reading my books and training the material in them has enabled people to find out what really works and what doesn’t, to really learn self defense, and to make their training far more practical and realistic.  It disturbs me that this one bad review from someone who clearly either didn’t read my book or didn’t see most of what was inside, has substantially decreased the amount of people who have access to realistic, practical material.
You can see the bad review here.

However, the MMA Base is not self defense, and that I ’ve never stated that it is.  The MMA Base is one little part of self defense.  Self defense involves a combination of strategy, training techniques, and techniques that include awareness and avoidance, unarmed physical self defense, and armed bodily self defense.  Awareness and prevention are far more significant than the MMA Base, for instance.  It’s for this reason that the MMA Base part of my novel is in Chapter 6 rather than Chapter 1.

Update: Changes Ahead

Bad Review

I proceed to explain why sport based fighting is inadequate for physical self defense.
I think the main reason he disliked the book was due to his misunderstanding regarding this sentence he wrote: “The writer ’s insistence that sport based fighting form the base for real world self defense was also highly suspect.

I haven’t posted or sent out any emails/updates in several months now.  I’ve been really busy with lots of big changes.  At some point early next year things will settle down, and I have plans to add more videos to my site along with possibly offering educational videos.  I’ll also get back to posting more on this site.  I have a backlog of at least a couple hundred emails, and I apologize if you’ve written and that I haven’t written back.  I’ll try to respond soon!
The article A Bad Review appeared first on Functional Self Defense.

What frustrates me about this review isn’t so much that this one person missed just about everything in the book, although that’s frustrating, but his misguided review has caused many individuals not to buy the book.  (This is most likely because of the publication ranking worse because of his review, although I’m sure some people have decided not to purchase it after reading what he wrote.)  And the primary reason I’m frustrated about people not buying the book doesn’t have anything to do with me making money by selling it.  I made this website and wrote the books because I really care about people knowing what works and what doesn’t concerning self defense.  It’s a passion of mine.  This is not exactly what I do for a living.  I don’t want the money.

So I’ve a favor to ask.  Lots of you reading this have purchased my books.  Lots of you have emailed me to express how much you learned from them.  If you’ve read the books, please take a moment or two to write a review on Amazon.  Doing this will help other martial artists and self defense practitioners who won’t see this material differently.  Thank you!

The reviewer also composed, “I did not find any new or unique material and/or insights inside this tome. ”  Again, he should not have read the book.  I have hundreds of martial arts and self defense books , and spend some time at least looking at every new book that I come across.  I can guarantee this reviewer that he has never seen some of the concepts, strategies, and techniques that are covered in my book.  There are new and unique material and insights in my book.
A few months ago someone wrote a bad/one star review of my first book, The Ultimate Guide to Unarmed Self Defense, on Amazon.com.  There are aspects for this review.  First, it’s entirely wrong.  And second, it caused my book sales to immediately drop by about 75%.  I’m going to address the points this person made in the review here on my blog.
