The word”how” appears frequently in self-defense related questions and answers as in

Howdo I shield myself from X?” And”This is how you shield yourself from Y.”

Typically, this”how” refers to some physical technique someone can use when being”assaulted” in some fashion. Here is the”Simple How“. When the Simple How is used in queries, it contributes to simplistic answers.

The “Complex How” takes into consideration that how is in fact a multi-faceted question that should take into consideration”who, what, when, where, and why“. For instance, how you effectively defend yourself, requires using this Sophisticated How.

Who’s are you? What are your physical, mental, and emotional strengths and limitations?
Who is another person? What are his or her physical, mental, and emotional strengths and limitations?

Who’s are you currently with? Who’s are your responsible for besides yourself?

What would be the circumstances of the attack? Whatare you in the process of doing? What is your level of experience? ‘What are some of your abilities? What are your weaknesses? What choices do you have? Whatmight have you ever done to provoke this attack? What might you have done to avoid it? What is your motivation level of the attacker? What is your motivation level to defend yourself? What kind of weapons may be involved?

When is this”assault” taking place? When will your response make the situation better? When will it make it worse? When will your response get you into legal trouble? When is it considered legally justified?

Where are you in the time of this”attack”? Where is a place of security? Where are others who may assist you? Where are additional potential assailants located? What are the Rules of Behaviorspecific to where you are located?

Why is this person attacking you? What is their motivation? What would be an effective deterrent strategy? They demonstrate the use of this Simple Howin the Complex How.
